Bishop the Butchers is situated at the top end of Uckfield's High Street, specialising in high quality meat, homemade sausages, black pudding, pies & pastries and, above all, high quality customer service.

Bishop the Butchers has been a fixture in the community since the 1920s, originally trading as Banisters Butchers until Joseph Frank Bishop bought and renamed it in the late 1930s. When Frank retired, he passed the business to his nephew, Reg Burchett, who ran it until 1988. At that point, then-manager Alan Vaughan bought the shop, keeping the Bishop’s name alive.

In 2005, Patrick Millward joined as Bishop’s first apprentice butcher. Over the years, Patrick gained multiple qualifications, worked his way up, and became the proud owner in 2017.

Since taking the reins, Patrick - with the support of his wife Laura - has brought Bishop’s into the modern era while preserving traditional craft skills. The shop has won local awards and introduced an array of products, from innovative sausage flavours and homemade black pudding to pies, sausage rolls, and classic family favourites. Patrick’s passion for the trade was recognised in 2024/25 when he was selected for the senior squad for Team GB UK Lions.

The Bishop’s team boasts over 100 years’ combined butchery experience. This includes Patrick’s first apprentice, Dan Figg, named Best Retail Apprentice in 2022, who is now progressing through the ranks. The shop sources only the finest meat from local farmers and producers, offering outstanding customer service to individual customers, caterers, pubs, and restaurants, as well as providing local home deliveries. Bishop’s also works closely with the community, supporting the local food bank and community fridge.
