Smithfield Awards 2025

The Q Guild Executive is delighted to announce that the special guest for the Smithfield Awards 2025 will be none other than Professor John Gilliland OBE, DSc., a renowned authority on sustainable agriculture and food security.

As the Professor of Practice at Queen’s University Belfast, Chair of ARC Zero, and Environmental Advisor to the AHDB and QMS, Professor Gilliland has been a guiding voice amidst the often conflicting and confusing narratives surrounding climate change.

True to his principles, Professor Gilliland operates a willow and livestock farm that has been independently verified as achieving “Beyond Net Zero” status. His work demonstrates that livestock farming, far from being the environmental villain portrayed by some, can play a critical role in positive environmental outcomes.

By blending practical farming expertise with years of high-level research and robust data, Professor Gilliland brings a clear and compelling perspective to the Net Zero conversation. His insights highlight the advancements and opportunities shaping the future of sustainable agriculture. Attendees can look forward to leaving the event with a renewed and optimistic view of how the industry is leading efforts toward long-term sustainability and secure nutrition across the UK and beyond.
