About Us

The Q Guild of Butchers was founded in 1984 with a clear and enduring vision –  to champion the very best independent butchers across the United Kingdom and to uphold the highest standards of quality, skill and professionalism within the craft.

The Story Behind The Q Guild

At a time when the meat trade was facing significant changes - shifting consumer expectations, supermarket expansion and new food regulations - a group of like-minded butchers, led by the late London butcher David Lidgate, came together to form an organisation that would protect and promote traditional values while embracing innovation and excellence. Thus, the Q Guild was born.

The "Q" in our name stands for Quality, and that principle has remained at the heart of everything we do.

Setting the Standard

From its earliest days, the Guild introduced rigorous criteria for membership, ensuring that only the most outstanding butchers were awarded the right to display the prestigious Q Guild branding. This seal of quality quickly became one of the most respected marks in the industry - synonymous with craftsmanship, integrity, and trust.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Guild grew in stature and reach, attracting exceptional butchers from across the UK. Our members have gone on to win countless national accolades, contribute to industry standards and pioneer innovation within the trade.

Looking to the Future

Now in its fifth decade, the Q Guild of Butchers remains as relevant and forward-thinking as ever. While staying true to its roots, the Guild continues to evolve - embracing new technologies, championing young talent and supporting the next generation of butchers through training, mentorship and recognition.

From a handful of pioneering members to a nationwide network of some of the country’s most respected butchers, the Guild’s story is one of shared purpose, pride in the trade and an ongoing commitment to excellence.
